New SIMPLEX splitting axe: This axe also nails it as a hammer – the perfect 2-in-1 solution
Winter is the best time for chopping wood as low temperatures cause the flow of sap in the trees to come to a halt. However, whether you chop wood for your fireplace at home or for a large forestry business - you need to be able to rely on excellent and dependable tools. The SIMPLEX splitting axe designed by Erwin Halder KG is ideally equipped for harvesting wood by hand and nearly any application imaginable in the forestry business. Engineered especially for the splitting of hardwood, the latest model conceived by the experts from Achstetten-Bronnen is the perfect supplement to Halder’s small but excellent range of forestry tools.
The chainsaw screeches and the axe is driven into the wood at great force, causing the wood fibres to tear – harvesting wood in the forest is not for the faint of heart. To make sure that both forestry professionals and home users seeking fuel for the fireplace can rely on more than just their muscles during this “backbreaking labour”, Erwin Halder KG is supplying them with the SIMPLEX splitting axe - an ultra-sharp axe that fits perfectly in the user's hand. This tool has proven its exceptional skills time and again - especially when used for splitting softwood. Halder is now unveiling a sibling product - the perfect solution for hardwood: This latest innovation will not become stuck in the harder wood thanks to its wedge-shaped ridges.
2 in 1: Axe and hammer
Whether they sport a streamlined design or wedge-shaped ridges – all models of the SIMPLEX splitting axe are much more than just a simple axe: One side houses a ground and polished axe blade made of drop-forged and hardened steel while the other is equipped with an insert made of superplastic. These attributes make the axe the tool of choice for both splitting wood and driving splitting edges into wood with perfect reliability. Unlike ordinary metal hammers used with metal wedges, the SIMPLEX will not leave behind any wood split up in shavings thanks to its superplastic insert. This helps minimise the risk of injury from chipped splinters.
“The proven SIMPLEX principle promises the highest possible economy. All parts - handle, housing, axe blade and insert - are perfectly matched with one another and exchangeable as necessary. This saves the user the trouble of replacing the entire tool when push comes to shove. Better still, the individual parts are not expensive: the total of their individual prices makes up the overall price of the splitting axe. As a consequence, customers buying the individual parts will not end up paying more in comparison”, asserts Volker Gernth, Sales Director Hand Tools at Erwin Halder KG.
The built-in handle protection sleeve of the cast steel housing ensures that the axe will remain a long-term, reliable partner for day-to-day use. The sleeve keeps the handle protected against damage and breakage if a strike fails to hit its intended target. The material selected for the handle offers singular properties: Hickory possesses one of the highest green densities found in any type of wood. It dampens vibrations while retaining its full elastic properties. What is more, its long-fibre structure provides for maximum safety in case of breakage.
For challenges of “major” - and “minor” - proportions
Its drop-forged and hardened steel insert made of premium carbon steel in combination with its turned nose make the SIMPLEX splitting maul the ideal partner for wood harvesting. Its greater weight and longer hickory handle furnish it with a greater striking force compared to the SIMPLEX splitting axe. Its unique features make it a breeze to split 1-metre logs and felled timber with a wedge and to drive in steel wedges in a safe and material-friendly way thanks to the tried-and-tested superplastic insert.
“Anyone who wants to split smaller logs of wood and kindling can trust that our hatchet is the right tool for the job - (virtually) a must-have for all outdoor enthusiasts such as campers, hunters or off-roaders”, explains Volker Gernth. “Our hatchet also makes it a snap to make coarse carvings or to sharpen wooden stakes.” Seamlessly forged from a single piece of special heat-treated steel, this sturdy hatchet has been balanced to perfection. These characteristics combined with its hand-made, non-slip leather handle guarantee the best possible handling. All sides of this hatchet are finely honed, polished and protected against corrosion. On top of that, Halder carefully hardens the blade and grinds it until it delivers the highest possible sharpness. The package is made complete by a premium leather belt pouch that serves as a blade guard.
Tree care and inspection made easy
Designed for tree inspectors and arborists, the SIMPLEX diagnostic hammer included in the forestry portfolio of Erwin Halder KG is available in two sizes. Offering different levels of hardness, the hammers inserts are made of a tried-and-tested rubber composite and splinter-free superplastic and provide maximum flexibility for the task of tapping suspected defects. Better still, its aluminium housing makes this hammer particularly lightweight.
